An artist’s canvas is often a sacred space. For some it is a sketchpad, or a roll of film, but for nearly all an underlying, an ideologically created set of guidelines exists in the place unto which an artist gives form in endless possibilities. “It is full of light” says Ira Svobodová, whose first US show, White Space, explores this concept in the medium of painting. Neutral sheaths of paint against the canvas grain meet pop expressions of color, geometric abstraction, and a calculated handle of the brush, and indeed an overall sense of lightness prevails in the works. The painter and occasional sculptor’s penchant for such modernist compositions is achieved through laborious layering of acrylic gels. Don’t miss the opening this Saturday at Laguna Beach’s CES Contemporary for your chance to delight in these paintings in person.
